3 AI Plays That Are Actually Delivering for IT Leaders

Author: Scott Kinka

If you’re in IT leadership today, you’re likely facing an avalanche of AI hype. Everyone’s got a pitch. Everyone promises transformation. But most of the time, they leave you buried in buzzwords and light on substance.

Here’s the difference in our vantage point at Bridgepointe: I’m not writing this from a theoretical ivory tower or a vendor pitch deck. As COO, I’ve had the unique privilege of seeing AI put to work across hundreds of suppliers and thousands of clients—across nearly every vertical and size category you can think of. We sit at the intersection of real-world execution and bleeding-edge innovation, and from this peak, the terrain looks a lot different than the view from just one company.

This guide is for the CIOs, CTOs, and IT execs who are done with the noise and want practical, ROI-driven guidance. Below are the three AI projects I’d start with today—ones I’ve seen work over and over—and one popular pitfall to avoid.

You’ll get:

  • Use cases that have driven real results
  • Tools you probably already have (Copilot and Gemini users, I see you)
  • A fast rollout framework you can start tomorrow
"The best AI implementations in IT are simple, repeatable, and—frankly—boring. They free up your team, improve speed, and reduce risk. That’s where the value is."

1. Automate IT Support with AI-Powered Virtual Assistants

The Problem:

Your help desk is swamped with repetitive tickets—password resets, access requests, printer issues. These low-level tickets consume high-value time. It’s like paying expert mountaineers to shovel snow off the driveway.

The AI Play:

Implement an AI-powered virtual assistant (VA) as a Tier 0 support layer. Let it handle the repetitive tasks, escalate the complex ones, and integrate with your existing ITSM platform—ServiceNow, Freshservice, or whatever stack you’re running.

Tools You Might Already Have:

  • Microsoft Copilot + Power Virtual Agents (easily ties into Teams and helpdesks)
  • Google Gemini + Vertex AI + Dialogflow (for building custom conversational flows)
  • Zendesk or Freshdesk AI modules (or Yellow.ai and Front.ai for more current)
  • Aisera or Capacity (for layering AI into your existing service stack)

What this strategy looks like in practice:

Company: Midmarket manufacturing firm with 2,300 employees

Problem: Over 1,200 monthly tickets—40% were password resets or “how do I…” questions

Solution: A conversational AI virtual assistant powered by Yellow.ai was implemented as the first line of IT support. Integrated with Azure Active Directory, the VA automated password resets, handled routine access requests, and provided instant answers to FAQs. The bot was deployed across Microsoft Teams, enabling employees to resolve common IT issues directly within their daily workflow. More complex tickets were seamlessly escalated to ServiceNow through Yellow.ai’s native integrations.

Outcome: Within 60 days of deployment, the Yellow.ai-powered VA deflected over 35% of incoming tickets, with password resets fully automated through Azure AD integration. Average response time dropped from 3 hours to under 30 seconds, and employee satisfaction scores for IT support increased by 20%. The help desk team was able to shift focus toward higher-impact, strategic projects, improving overall IT service delivery.

Success Tips:

  • Train the VA using your existing knowledge base and historical ticket data
  • Start small—tackle 5–10 common questions first
  • Market it internally. Adoption matters just as much as implementation

This is one of the most consistent wins we’ve seen across industries. Low cost. Fast ROI. High morale impact on IT staff.

2. Enhance Security with AI-Driven Threat Detection

The Problem:

Today’s security teams are dealing with an unmanageable volume of alerts. Signature-based detection is outdated, and SOC teams are overwhelmed. It’s like trying to spot an avalanche using last season’s trail map.

The AI Play:

Use AI and ML to detect behavioral anomalies across endpoints, cloud apps, and networks. These models spot odd user behavior, unusual access patterns, and subtle lateral movement—even when threats don’t match any known signatures.

Tools You Might Already Have:

  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint + Sentinel (Copilot for Security is coming)
  • Google Chronicle + Mandiant
  • Darktrace, Vectra, CrowdStrike Falcon
  • Splunk + ML Toolkit

What this strategy looks like in practice:

Company: Healthcare SaaS firm (~600 employees)

Problem: The SOC team missed a lateral movement threat due to alert fatigue

Solution: Microsoft Sentinel implemented with behavioral analytics tied into Defender

Outcome: 70% reduction in false positives. During a red team test, the system flagged and isolated suspicious lateral movement within 90 seconds of a zero-day exploit simulation.

Success Tips:

  • Integrate with identity and access management systems
  • Establish baselines for “normal” user behavior
  • Feed AI tools as much relevant data as possible: access logs, endpoint data, email telemetry, etc.

Security teams that deploy this properly stop playing whack-a-mole and start getting ahead of threats. The game changes.

3. Optimize Infrastructure with Predictive Maintenance

The Problem:

Outages cost money and kill momentum. But most companies are still in reactive mode when it comes to infrastructure. They’re skiing without checking the avalanche report.

The AI Play:

Use AI to detect degradation, usage spikes, and system anomalies before they result in outages. Think of it as a “forecast” for your infrastructure health.

Tools You Might Already Have:

  • Azure Monitor + Microsoft Copilot
  • Google Cloud Operations Suite (formerly Stackdriver) + Gemini
  • Datadog + Watchdog AI
  • LogicMonitor, Splunk

What this strategy looks like in practice:

Company: National logistics firm with hybrid data centers

Problem: Two legacy servers caused outages every 6–8 weeks, disrupting warehouse operations

Solution: Cribl with predictive analytics was deployed to monitor disk I/O, CPU, and memory trends

Outcome: Three outages prevented in Q1. Downtime was reduced by 95%. The team moved from reactive firefighting to proactive remediation.

Success Tips:

  • Start with one asset class (e.g., servers, firewalls)
  • Monitor temperature, CPU/RAM load, disk wear, patch state
  • Integrate alerts into your change management process

Predictive maintenance doesn’t just save costs—it builds trust across the business.

AI Project to Avoid: Building a Custom Model From Scratch

Let’s cut through the noise: unless you’re launching the next OpenAI, do not start with building your own model.

We’ve seen too many companies pour millions into custom models only to end up with delays, security issues, and lackluster results. Training an LLM or ML model requires:

  • Massive compute resources
  • Gigantic datasets
  • Teams of data scientists
  • Painstaking security and compliance reviews

It’s a brutal climb—and often not worth it.

Better Idea:

Use the models you already have access to (Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.). Fine-tune them for your org’s needs. You’ll get 90% of the benefit for 10% of the effort and cost.

We’ve seen dozens of clients thrive by doing this. Save the hardcore model-building for next year—if ever.

Your 3-Phase Framework to Deploy AI in IT (Without Getting Buried)

AI is like off-piste skiing: if you don’t have a plan, the terrain will eat you alive. Here’s the three-phase rollout strategy we recommend to our clients:

Phase 1: Identify Use Cases + Assess Readiness

  • Talk to ITSM, security, and infrastructure teams
  • Look for high-volume, repetitive tasks or alert overload
  • Audit your current tools—you might already own powerful AI capabilities through Microsoft or Google

Phase 2: Pilot Fast, Learn Faster

  • Choose one use case: password resets, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance
  • Use low-code/no-code platforms to build an MVP in 4 weeks
  • Track performance: ticket deflection, false positive rates, downtime, etc.
  • Publicize early wins. (Your CIO loves a good dashboard)

Phase 3: Operationalize + Scale

  • Broaden the scope—more users, more systems, more workflows
  • Integrate into platforms like your CMDB, ITSM, IAM, and SIEM
  • Build governance for ethical AI use, data security, and model bias
  • Develop internal AI champions. This isn’t just for execs—it’s for your engineers

Boring AI Is the Best AI

Here’s what I’ve learned from working with hundreds of clients and suppliers: if your first AI project feels exciting, it’s probably the wrong one.

The best AI implementations in IT are simple, repeatable, and—frankly—boring. They free up your team, improve speed, and reduce risk. That’s where the value is.
